Are you grieving the Holy Spirit?
This is a commonly used statement today among many believers, especially when a believer is not acting how he is expected to.
Ephesians 4:30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
The verse starts with ‘and’, that will show it’s a continuation of another, so let’s take a look at the preceding verse.
Ephesians 4:29 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.
4:30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
Verse 29 is not talking about merely the use of vulgar words.
Corrupt communication in context here is that which is not edifying to the hearers – saying things that destroy others. It would have a strong link to saying things out of anger, as in vs 26-27. He instructs that we give no place to the devil, the scripture instructs that our words should minister grace – build up people. When you don’t do this, YOU GRIEVE THE SPIRIT.
Many a Christian are loose with words, it ought not be so. The believer has regulation in his spirit, he can control what he says and how he says it, he can choose to keep quiet too.
Words are quite important. Salvation is through words – it is preached. (Rom. 10:8-15). Healing is ministered through words. Words must never be taken as a toy of time.
LET NO CORRUPT COMMUNICATION proceed from you, the spirit is not going to do this, it is your responsibility to learn the art of keeping quiet when you have nothing edifying to say. Because words once said cannot be taken back. The believer must learn to guard his tongue well.
Eph. 5:4; Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks.
No foolish talking. Sometimes, listen to yourself before you speak and judge it.
Col. 3:8; But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.
PUT IT OFF.
Col 4:6 Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.
Always!
Edify with your words, bringing down another never lifts you, what it does is contrary to the spirit you have, it grieves the spirit.
Say: I have an edifying tongue, I am not loose in my speech, rather my words are filled with grace. I give no place for the flesh, Amen.
