Huge faith (2)
Ignorance is not a nice attire for anyone, it brings shame, hence our pursuit to grow in the knowledge of the right things and right mode of explanation of scriptures must be upheld.
Oftentimes, some believers are caught in the web of thinking that some miracles need more faith than others, but it’s not so. In the natural sense, it would appear that way, and that is why we must train our minds consistently to think God’s word and think God’s thoughts.
In the first part, we have seen that what it takes to turn things around supernaturally in the natural is faith, simple faith. Jesus didn’t teach sizes of faith, he taught exercising our faith. In other words, the faith to heal the sick is the faith to raise the dead, not more faith, not huge faith. The disciples of Jesus thought it so and said, “Lord, increase our faith”, Jesus’ response was clear: JUST HAVE FAITH! He goes on to explain that pure simple faith is speaking what you want and you will have what you say. (Luke 17:5-6; Mark 11:23)
Let’s explore another vital issue:
Matt. 17:20-21;
20 And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.
21 Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.
The background of the story is that a certain man brought his son who was sick to the disciples to cast out a demon, but they couldn’t. Then, Jesus came and did it with ease, hence the question – “Why couldn’t we cast him out?”
Many agitations and submissions must have coursed their thoughts: ‘Maybe it’s only Jesus that has the dispensation’, “Maybe our faith wasn’t enough”… questions that needed an answer, a puzzle that must be solved… WHY COULDN’T WE?
Traditionally, many have taught that this kind of ‘demon’ only goes out by prayer and fasting, it’s a “strong” demon. So, you will often hear things like, “It’s a big problem, we need to fast and pray about it”, “It’s more than what we had faith for last week”, “This one needs fasting”, or “we can’t pray this alone, we need a prayer chain for it”.
This scripture is not saying certain demons are stronger than others, neither is it saying that certain demons won’t respond to Jesus and faith in his name, no! The subject of the sentence in vs. 20 is UNBELIEF. It was their unbelief that was their limitation. Thus, properly put, what Jesus was saying is:
Therefore, this kind of unbelief only goes by prayer and fasting. It doesn’t take huge faith, just simple faith. However, some unbelief (due to an unrenewed mind and yielding to the logic of the mind or to the voice of the flesh) are hard to deal with, you have to pray and fast to get them out.
Worthy of note is that the prayer is not increasing your faith as it were, but rather it is dealing with unbelief in the mind. It deals with the negativism of logic and the human perception and limitation about the power of God. The prayer deals with it.
In our faith walk, we must consistently give ourselves to prayer. In prayer, we get to trust God easily as we rest on the power of God, and that was what Jesus was explaining to them.
Say this: I believe and receive the power of God, the supernatural is my daily experience- I deal with the limitations of the mind and trust solely in what God can do.
