Jesus – Our Kinsman Redeemer

Exodus 6:6 6 Say therefore to the people of Israel, ‘I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will deliver you from slavery to them, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great acts of judgment.

God designates himself here as a deliverer and redeemer. He promises rescue. This cue becomes important and vital when we consider the repeated allusion to this action of rescue, deliverance, and redemption by God through His prophets all through the scriptures.

Keep in remembrance Paul’s Bible study guide in 2Timothy 3:15-16;
15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

The scriptures (Genesis-Malachi) are for teaching. The previous verse makes plain what we will find in the scriptures – salvation through faith. This means we will see unique situations, statements, prophecies, and examples that, when explained, are lending to God’s plan of salvation through faith.

This explains Jesus’ profound statement in Luke 24:25-27 KJV:
25 Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken:
26 Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?
27 And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.

Seen that? Jesus is the personality of the scriptures. He is the primary intent behind the writings, the prophecies, the promises, sometimes in symbols and seeming stories even. It therefore behoves us as students of God’s word is to find out – to unveil and unearth by reading, that which has been kept covert by unbelief.

A beautiful example of this is found in the story of Ruth and Boaz in the Book of Ruth. Ruth, a widow, and her mother-in-law, Naomi, faced challenging circumstances. To be in this position meant loss of income and support, loss of possession and ultimately loss of property. It was here that Boaz, a relative of Naomi, emerges as a redeemer who plays a crucial role in their lives. He stepped in and paid the price of their redemption. He paid in full, saving both Naomi and Ruth from loss and destitution.

Just like Boaz stepped in and paid the price for Naomi and Ruth’s redemption, so too has Jesus stepped in to bring us redemption. In his sacrificial death, burial and resurrection, we have been granted forgiveness and eternal life and freedom from the hold of sin. He freed us from the bondage that held us captive.

Thank you, Jesus – our Kinsman-Redeemer!
