Serve the Lord (1)

Matt. 28:18-20;
18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

A disciple means someone who is learning from scratch. He is described as a pupil. Thus, he ought to be taught afresh. When someone gets saved, he begins to learn God afresh, with no assumptions. Knowledge is therefore critical to the Christian faith. As a matter of fact, knowledge forms the foundation of our service to God.

It is important that a believer knows how to serve the Lord. Service means you’ll be used by the Lord. The believer must place his service to the Lord as primary in his life, nothing comes above it.

Paul instructs this clearly;

Rom. 12:11;
11 Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord;

Serving the Lord takes zeal, passion, and effort. Service is proof of maturity. As one grows, responsibilities become pertinent.

Eph. 2:8-10;
8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

His salvation makes us sons of God. Verse 10 now makes us see that we are created unto good works. Thus, with our response to the Gospel comes responsibilities. Jesus Christ did the finished work; we are left with the unfinished works. As we grow spiritually, there’s a demand on us to do things in the house of God. Thus, you must ask yourself: “What am I doing for the Lord?” “What do I do in God’s house?”

Service goes beyond coming to church because it means you’ll offer something – you will serve. If you just come to the church, learn the word, and go home without doing anything, you simply attended church. That isn’t service. Your learning of the word is for service.

Service means you’ll make yourself available to be used. Are you available? Oftentimes, when you see the work of God prosper in a place, it is people being used by God to make that happen, committed people! The Christian must recognize that he is busier than the Lord intends if his ‘busyness’ excludes him from serving the Lord. So, you make yourself available. You don’t give the Lord scraps, he deserves the first and the best. He is the Lord.

A Christian who is fond of giving excuses will never walk in God’s will for his life. Learn to do away with excuses – it benefits no one. Availability in the Lord’s service means you can be found when needed.

The real glory is in serving the Lord, Serving the Lord isn’t an extra-curricular activity, neither is it a hobby. That means, whether it is comfortable or not, you stay serving the Lord. The proof of service is that you make yourself available.

Always remember that eternity is longer than now, and one day everyone will answer to the Lord. Therefore, learn to weigh what you do. Ask yourself: “What do I put ahead of me?” “What do I value most?” “What am I doing for the Lord?” These are vital questions that will put your commitment to God’s work and his people in check as you look to serving the Lord.
