Sing in the Spirit always
Matt. 28:18-20;
18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
We are called to be disciples of the Christ. We are disciples of the supernatural learning. The new creation is not ordinary. It’s wrong to think that the believer is just an ordinary man.
2Cor. 5:17;
17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
‘New’ is the Greek word ‘Kainos’ which means something fresh, never existed before. The believer is that fresh creature of God. When a man gets saved, he now begins to learn this freshness – that’s spiritual growth. We are disciples of the new, and that means we begin to learn new desires.
You come to Jesus as you are but he doesn’t leave you as you are. If a man is saved and being discipled, there will be obvious changes. The word of God trains us how to think (Phil. 4:8). Thus, we have the word as a filter for our thoughts. The word of God trains us in the new.
In this new life, we have new songs. The believer can actually sing by the Spirit. He can pray in the spirit, he can cast out demons.
1Cor. 14:2;
2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.
Speaking in tongues is to God. You are the object of advantage when you speak in tongues. However, when the believer wants to edify others, he prophesies. This means it is possible for a man to have activities by the Spirit.
1Cor. 14:15;
15 What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.
This is one of the activities the believer has by the spirit of God – he can sing by the Spirit. Singing is part of our fellowship with God.
Rom. 15:9;
9 And that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy; as it is written, For this cause I will confess to thee among the Gentiles, and sing unto thy name.
Jam. 5:13;
13 Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms.
Singing is part of our expression of joy. If to pray in the spirit is to pray in tongues, it means singing in the spirit will also be singing in tongues. When you sing in the spirit, you edify yourself. However, when you sing in tongues and interpret, others are edified, and that’s what we call a psalm.
You can sing in the spirit! It’s something a believer should do often.
See Paul’s instruction to Ephesus: Eph. 5:18-19;
18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;
19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;
Singing and making melody to the Lord in your heart. This means that one of the ways to stay filled with the spirit is by singing. Verse 20 shows us that it is also the perfect way to give thanks. (1Cor 14:17)
Col. 3:16-17;
16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.
Psalms actually ought to teach, to admonish. This is what we have in Christ. In Matt. 26:29, Jesus sang with his disciples. It takes a man born of the spirit to sing by the spirit. As we sing, direction is given, clarity is birth, and Jesus is glorified.
