The old is not so old

In the modern day, one of the complications we have with Bible study is the classification of some things as Old Testament and other things as New Testament. The Bible is a collection of books that is separated – that is, different from other books – Hence, it should be seen as such – a collection of books. The books were now either called The Old Testament or The New Testament, based on time and their dispensation of when they were written.

Jesus taught from Genesis to Malachi, and he didn’t call it the Old Testament – he called it the Scriptures or the Prophets. What we have as the Old Testament is not written.

Luke 24:25-27;
25 Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken:
26 Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?
27 And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.

After Jesus rose from the dead, he met with his disciples and he started to teach them from the scriptures.

Paul taught the gospel from the prophets. (Acts 13)

This explains to us that we cannot take the Old Testament off the Bible and say it’s not part of the Christian faith. The whole Bible is in sync and everything there is needed. The way to understand the scriptures is to read them all together.

Stephen taught the gospel from the scriptures in Acts 7. The apostles taught Genesis to Malachi, it is the word of God (Act 19:20) and it only needs to be well-explained.

Read Psalms 16:1-11;

We see in Ephesians 1:16-23 how Paul prayed for the church in Ephesus as he was about to teach them from the scriptures (Genesis to Malachi). He prayed for them that they see clearly the writings of the prophets, which has both the figurative and literal writings. They would talk about what God can do and link it to what is happening at the time. Hence, the need to investigate the words of the prophets and for the prayer that they see clearly.
