What to shun and avoid

2Tim 2:15-16;
15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
16 But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.

The background of this is a vital instruction Paul gave Timothy on what his response ought to be amongst false doctrine; how Timothy must rightly divide the word of truth, efficiently discharging his duty as one who has been approved of God. Then, he points his attention to what can drag him back – PROFANE AND VAIN BABBLINGS.

We sometimes get caught up in that we should outrightly ignore. The word profane implies an ’empty talk’. At times, you meet folks who, in a bid to sound logical, talk down on the scriptures, these ones do not want explanations rather they are there to look for verses that will ‘contradict’ what is being explained, Paul says SHUN! You can’t love people more than themselves, help yourself too, shun vain babbling.

Paul later told him in the same letter:

2Tim 2:23; But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes.

We must learn to follow this every time! Questions like: “Is it possible to honor my pastor too much?” Hello, have you even started the life of honour, honour first.

There is such a thing as an unlearned question, questions that show the individual is untaught or uncultured and untrained. We must avoid, we must be sane in our questions too, and how we ask them.

This is an apostolic instruction, the way he says you should avoid and flee fornication is the same way he says AVOID FOOLISH QUESTIONS, SHUN EMPTY TALKS.

These empty talks are against proper Bible interpretation, they would support every other thing than rightly dividing the word, shun these, and don’t entertain!

Paul says the same again:

Titus 3:9; But avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain.

They won’t profit you. They have no usefulness, it is of no advantage. When the scriptures say FLEE, don’t try and be wiser than the written word. Do what it says!

Say: I keep my sanity. I avoid foolish questions. I am apt to teach and rightly divide the word.
